Where women transform the world

Remember when California eliminated its Department of Public Health's Domestic Violence Program's with a line item veto?

Well, the CA state senate unanimously (thank goodness) voted for a bill that State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, has introduced to restore $16.3 million for the program by taking money from the Alternative and Renewable Vehicle Fuel Technology Fund to support domestic violence shelters for one year. If passed, this bill will provide much needed funding to 94 shelters. These emergency funds are urgently needed, as six CA shelters have already closed, and in many cases shelters are being forced to combine long term with emergency shelters, and reduce staff and services. Many more shelters are in danger of closing without these funds being restored.

We need you to call on the Governor to do the right thing and sign this life-saving bill as soon as possible. These funds cannot be transferred to the domestic violence shelters without his signature, so contact him NOW!

CALL HIS OFFICE AT 916-445-2841. I don't care where you live!

At some point we'll have to discuss the crappiness of making it a decision between funding DV shelters and taking funding away from the already underfunded green auto alternatives. But that's for after this is fixed.
