10 Ways to Have a Ridiculously Abundant Holiday Season! at Your own phone

December 14, 2011 from 8pm to 9pm
Hi everyone!I'm so excited to share a telecall I'm holding on how to have a wonderfully abundant holiday season. Why am I doing this? Because it no fun at all to feel miserable or less-than-happy when everyone around you appears (and that’s the operative word here) to be having the time of their lives.  And feeling low just ruins the whole holiday season, doesn’t it?  I mean, who wants that?  This is a time of parties and family and friends and wine and...and...and, so let’s do whatever we can…See More

Teaching communication and compassion in Israel and Palestine

Roberta Wall is a Nonviolent Communication teacher based in Upstate New York. This Spring, she is teaching NVC in Israel and Palestine.  At the time of the most recent bombing in Jerusalem (March 2011), this is what she was doing:  Arava Institute NVC TrainingThe room was abuzz with participants working in small groups, listening to the feelings and needs of people who heard messages that were hard to hear. In our small group, the first message one of the young men picked was trying to talk to…See More

Stand for Planned Parenthood and women's right to have access to low-cost & good healthcare

Today the US House of "Representatives" voted to bar Planned Parenthood from federal funding. They cut funding for HIV tests, cancer screenings, birth control, and more, putting millions of women and families at risk.I live in New York, where all but two (!!) congressMEN voted against the bill.  It's at times like this that I (fleetingly) wish I lived in a place where my deeply held progressive beliefs weren't quite so mainstream, where I could repeatedly dial my representative and it might…See More

Profile Information

What issues are most important to you?
Women's empowerment, reproductive health, the environment (climate change & chopping down redwoods, specifically), poverty, violence against women, ending racism and homophobia, domestic violence...
Framed more positively, I want the world to be the beautiful and safe place I know it can be.
What kind of social activism do you engage in?
I'm a social worker/community organizer, and co-founder of the Red Tent Women's Project, and proud of it!
What organizations do you love or work with?
Red Tent Women's Project (of course!), V-Day, SAFER (Students Active for Ending Rape), Planned Parenthood, the list goes on and on and on...
What books, music, films, etc. do you think educate and empower women?
So many! Right now I'm reading Blessed Unrest by Paul Hawken, about a global humanitarian movement that encompasses the numerous environmental, social justice and indigenous preservation nongovernmental organizations throughout the world.
Career: what do you do or want to do?
I'm a cofounder and director of the Red Tent Women's Project, and I love it! Basically my goal is to be happy and help others achieve their highest potential.
What skills and interests to do you have to offer to others in the Red Tent Women's Project communty? This is your chance, so sell yourself!
I have a masters from Hunter College School of Social Work, and I have some experience in starting a nonprofit. :)

I'm in the process of becoming an eco-coach--helping people reduce their carbon footprints. If you're interested in learning more, send me an email. I am also a writer and a photographer--you can see some of my photos at erykap.etsy.com.

I am also interested in women's health, and I'm lucky enough to be on a team with Dr. Christiane Northrup (who wrote Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, among other great women's health books) in order to maximize financial and physical health.
What would you like other members of this community to know? About yourself, about the world...anything (try not to be profane, though)!
I'm a social worker, a nonprofit start-up coach, a carbon coach, a photographer and a writer.
What was your "women really matter and I'm going to do something about it" moment?
I was lucky to be raised by a fantastic single mother who always made it clear that women matter, that girls matter, and that we have power.

I've worked my entire life towards reproductive health and justice, with battered women, women refugees, women's health. My earliest memories are going to marches on Washington for peace, abortion, and equal pay. (See mom above. :) ) But my proudest moments are opening the doors to the Red Tent Women's Project on March 21st, 2006, and when we launched Red Tent part II (aka this website) on August 13, 2008.

An eww moment, from an unexpected source

I thought long and hard about posting this.

I am a big believer in supporting other organizations and their missions, especially women's empowerment organizations, and I don't like to badmouth efforts and approaches. There have certainly been times when I've disagreed with methods and sometimes even the outcomes. And I'm sure there are people who've disagreed with the Red Tent's.

(I know this because we've gotten emails. For which I'm grateful...after a few minutes to… Continue

Why everything, EVERYTHING should be in writing

So a few years back when we were getting the Red Tent Women's Project ready to open, we (the board of directors) decided that it would be a good idea to have a security alarm system installed.

It was the first time I'd ever done something like that--I'd never had an alarm system in my life, and never had my home robbed (knock on wood!), and so I called around to a few places to get quotes. Most were five year contracts, and there was one that quoted me a three year contract so I went… Continue

Read my political blog...elsewhere!

Since IRS rules are strict about nonprofits and partisan politics, and I'm currently engaging in partisan politics in Ohio, I can't post here. So check out my blog! I'd love to hear what you all think.

Hi Eryka

It's been a long while - I just noticed that the last comment was mine on Oct 11th... Are you OK? You gave me a lot of encouragement when I was starting out with my group and I do think of you and wonder.

All the best
