WHAT MAKES A MAN A GOOD MAN? FROM THE RED TENT (HEART OF ENGLAND)

Profile Information

What issues are most important to you?
Human rights, education, an end to bigotry, co-operating with nature to save our planet, love and friendship, good communications, celebrating life in creative ways
What kind of social activism do you engage in?
Building The Red Tent (Heart of England); networking with other women's groups in Birmingham, England; journalism; working to create a Birmingham Women's Calendar with useful contact info - we don't have a women's resources centre here...
What organizations do you love or work with?
Friends of the Earth; ECPAT (a charity which campaigns against child prostitution, pornography and trafficking); WAITS; Ulfah Arts; Shakti Women; Saheli Women - and other women's groups in my city
What books, music, films, etc. do you think educate and empower women?
The works of William Shakespeare (a fellow 'Brummy' who loved and respected women and portrayed our strength, intelligence and endurance on the stage); anything by Elizabeth Gaskell and Charles Dickens - the 19th-century authors probably said it all (wish the world had listened!); The Red Tent (Anita Diamant); The Voice of the Earth (Theodore Roszak - that's the literature. Music - mmm... Films: Erin Brokovich, The Color Purple, Avatar.
Career: what do you do or want to do?
Writing, directing my women's project, networking, organising women's events, improving life for people in any small way I can
What skills and interests to do you have to offer to others in the Red Tent Women's Project communty? This is your chance, so sell yourself!
I'm a published writer and journalist, educator, good at strategic & divergent thinking and bringing people together. Like to be a creative thinker and be able to see the way ahead - for others as well as myself. Able to befriend and work with women with mental health challenges, helping them to fight their corner against the ignorance prevalent in society and make the most of their gifts and talents - especially since I have firsthand experience of bipolar (manic depression).
What would you like other members of this community to know? About yourself, about the world...anything (try not to be profane, though)!
The greatest love of my life is my four children: Stephanie, Richard, Michael and Julia, who love me just as I am (and I them!). Favourite places: anywhere there's a red tent gathering, seashores and forest, dear old Birmingham, the Algarve, Scotland - and just for contrast: Ouagadougou. Oh, and of course, in the middle of a hearty hug, anytime, anywhere!
What was your "women really matter and I'm going to do something about it" moment?
When I was at primary school, a group of girls bullied me because I was different (bookish and self-contained), and although I was only 7, I thought, "Girls shouldn't be like this towards each other - we should stick together, it's a tough life!" I'm even more strongly of this opinion nowadays, with so many women still feeling lonely, miserable, dominated and/or undervalued - and underachieving.

International Women's Day

What are you doing to celebrate IWD this year? Are you going out with friends to enjoy a cultural or social event? Are you staying in to think of others who cannot or do not feel like celebrating because of where they are and what they've endured? There are so many little things we can do that (in the spiritual scheme of things) make a difference: ring a woman friend, email an encouraging message, take someone out who has mobility problems or financial constraints and treat them... Attend an…

The Birmingham Women's Calendar goes online! News from Red Tent (England)

Hi everyone

It's been 6 months since The Red Tent here in Birmingham, England, won funding to produce the first ever women's calendar for our city. Not only does it feature nature photos taken by women in our network and other groups and organisations we're friendly with, but a 4-page directory of useful numbers and addresses specific to Birmingham...

Feedback has been universally positive, and we know of many organisations and individuals around the city…

Anger Management

Each of us has an overriding emotion, according to experts. Ever asked yourself what yours might be?

Mine has always been anger, but it wasn't until I was diagnosed just under 2 years ago with bipolar (the version that they call cyclothymia, where you experience rapid and abrupt changes in brain nerve cell function, resulting in mood changes - same as Stephen Fry) that I got to work with a psychotherapist and unpack my anger. At the tender age of 51, it was quite an…

Five Crowned Women

On 21st December, 4 friends and I were 'croned' - crowned as elders of The Red Tent - at our monthly meeting. It was a very special time for us all. The ceremony itself was very simple, personalized to fit who we are and the time of year (tissue paper crowns, and red candles, and mulled wine to drink).

We listened to a song that's becoming beloved of older women: Susan Boyle's rendering of 'I am who I was born to be' as we sat together, away from the younger women, reflecting on our… Continue
