Where women transform the world

Jan Tchamani

The Wave - climate demo, 5 Dec 09, London

Members of the Red Tent (Heart of England) joined tens of thousands of people to encircle the Houses of Parliament yesterday, to encourage the 192 world leaders attending the Copenhagen summit later this month to put into action plans to radically cut carbon emissions over the next few crucial years.

The ice in the Arctic Ocean will have completely melted by 2013, and this will affect the ocean currents which keep temperatures from extremes around the world. The temperature of the ocean has risen dramatically, threatening oxygen levels in the water and our sealife. This means also that the ice remaining is now also melting from underneath... There are many short videos on Youtube showing huge pieces of ice-cliffs falling off into the sea - pieces the size of a skyscraper crashing down... Flooding, tidal waves, dust storms, famine, deforestation, gas flaring - most of which, for the moment, is affecting the world's poorest and most vulnerable people most of all... It's time to allow ourselves to be shocked by these scenes into working together to reduce our CO2 emissions. Each one of us is responsible, not only to ourselves but to the young children who, by the age of 40, will be facing the terrible consequences of our laissez-faire attitude, our complacency and our selfishness.

At The Wave yesterday, 44,000 of us wanted to show our leaders that the ordinary people of our country are serious in our resolve to back politicians and others who are willing to put the Planet first.

Watch the video clip to understand what it was all about. The spokeswoman is a Christian Aid worker:

It's time to act. Time is short.

Best wishes,
Jan
